Perimenopause.. what is it?

Posted by John Hamilton on 21st Sep 2017

Perimenopause, also known as menopause transition or climacteric (critical period), takes place over several years in advance of the menopause. According to the North American Menopause Society, perimenopause can last for 4 to 8 years.

During perimenopause the ovaries gradually re-balance their oestrogen and progesterone production in preparation for the menopause and the final cessation of periods. With the average age for menopause being 50 in Ireland, perimenopause generally starts for women in their mid 40s. However, it is possible for perimenopause to start in the late 30s and early 40s.

We often hear from women who find that their skin experiences a lot of change during this time, like dryness/ spots/ redness. Doctors will often not know much about why your skin is reacting/ changing like this and diagnose this as a skin problem, rosacea being one they say which is wrong.

The one thing which is very evident is using the big brand skincare products with all the synthetic chemicals are almost certainly going to react on your skin during this time. We can work with you on this journey to find the right skincare for your skin at this time.
