Valentines Day. V-Day. V’s Day. Stupid *&@!£ day. Whatever you’d like to call it, it’s almost upon us.
We’ve noticed some research recently that actually refers to Valentine’s Day Anxiety. You don’t have to be single to experience this anxiety either, lots of people in relationships experience anxiety from the pressure to appear perfect.
"We receive a lot of messaging from society that, not only must we be in relationships, we must be in the perfect relationship," Allison Zamani, AMFT/APCC, of the Centre for Mindful Psychotherapy, tells Bustle. "If you find yourself judging yourself for being single or feeling down because your relationship is not all that you want it to be, try to take care of yourself."
Valentines Day can often encourage an ‘actions speak louder than words’ mindset. An extravagant yet temporary gesture can be expected but rarely means as much as a heartfelt message, whether that be in a card or a little note with your toast in the morning.
If you are in a relationship and find yourself bitterly disappointed every year or suffering from anxiety around this time of year, open a conversation with your partner. Anxiety can be caused by the fear of being misunderstood so be honest, open & discuss what you’d both like to do so you can find a nice happy medium.
Our advice? Surround yourself with positive like-minded people, remember love isn’t exclusive to intimate relationships (spend the day with your best friend or sibling), invest time in YOU & be happy with what YOU have to be thankful for. Friends, family, career, health, that new rug in the lounge that just feels like heaven between your toes.
