Why you should rethink using a Retinol
Retinols have been hailed as the holy grail of anti-aging skincare and every brand now seems to offer one. As dermatologists with over 20 years expertise in skin ageing, I believe that Retinols can actually be harmful to the skin, are a total waste of money in terms of an anti-ageing skincare routine and that you are not being told the full story about them!
The FDA agrees with us too!
“Retinol is a potent form of synthetic vitamin A. Data from an FDA study indicates that retinoid ingredients may speed the development of skin tumours and lesions on sun-exposed skin.”
What does a Retinol do to the skin?
When a retinol is applied to the skin, it encourages the surface skin cells to turn over faster making way for the new cell growth underneath.
Not only is this process interfering with the molecular biology of those cells, it also removes the natural protective surface layer of the skin which protects your Collagen, Fibres & Elastins leaving you far more susceptible to extensive free-radical damage.
This new skin you are exposing through the sped up exfoliation process has not had adequate time to build up any natural protection. This means that you can be more susceptible to Skin Cancer, Pigmentation Spots and Premature Ageing & Wrinkles.
Knowing this risk, many brands then encourage heavier sunscreen use when using retinoids to theoretically ‘protect’ against the increased threat of UVA and UVB ray BUT as we discuss in our blog, sunscreens can often do more damage than they protect.
Retinol has also been shown in research to thicken your skin. When someone has had extensive sun exposure they tend to have thicker skin and can look dramatically older than they are.
What to do instead?
There are better ways to stop wrinkles and fine lines without causing this level of damage to your skin!
The latest research on Cell Ageing shows that unless you have potent Antioxidants reaching the deeper layers of your skin, your anti aging efforts are not going to achieve a great deal. Using a cream or serum on its own will sit on the surface layer of the skin, it won’t get the active ingredients to the lower levels of your skins here these collagen and fibres and elastins are made. This is where Natural Oils step in.
Natural Oils contain the most powerful, unadulterated antioxidants and will act as a carrier for the natural vitamins being applied to your skin, delivering them to the dermis to boost repair, protection from free radicals and anti-ageing.
So the bottom line is don’t be tempted to follow the trend, stick to tried and tested anti-ageing methods that really work.
Our recommendation? Ditch synthetic damaging retinols and indulge your skin with potent Antioxidants found in unadulterated, Therapeutic Grade, Natural Plant Oils. These oils contain Vitamins and Proteins.

‘I ordered this partly because I was looking for something natural, but also because I'm fed up with being bombarded with the old 'you must use retinol' message (I tried an expensive retinol cream from an expensive brand for about three days a while back and felt as though my face was slowly being burnt off). It was actually researching the use of retinol in skincare products that led me to this particular product, so I thought I'd give it a try. It arrived yesterday, so before bed I cleansed and applied a small amount of the oil. Firstly it smells gorgeous - no synthetic smells or 'aftertastes' with this, which I find very reassuring. Secondly, the consistency is thick but silky, so not at all like an oil slick if you know what I mean. It covers beautifully, and I can see that my bottle is going to last a really long time which makes it a superb value. Thirdly, I woke up this morning to fresh skin for the first time in ages. I looked glowy and rested, but most of all I could see healthy, calmed, and dare I say slightly plumped skin! One night! I think what I'm going to see is very happy, nourished skin that's doing rather well for its age’
These are the oils we recommend, we have a product for every skin type and condition
