Why conventional acne treatments often
make things worse
The standard medical approach to acne has barely changed in 30 years. Topical antibiotics kill bacteria, but bacteria develop resistance, and long-term antibiotic use disrupts the skin microbiome in ways that can actually increase inflammation over time.
Roaccutane (isotretinoin) is effective for severe cystic acne but comes with well-documented systemic side effects. It also doesn't address the hormonal or inflammatory root cause, which is why a significant proportion of patients relapse after completing a course.
The problem is inflammation, not just bacteria
The latest dermatological research increasingly points to inflammation as the primary driver of acne, not bacterial overgrowth. Propionibacterium acnes thrives in an already-inflamed follicular environment. The inflammation comes first.
This is why anti-inflammatory botanical actives, formulated at a level that penetrates beyond the surface, can have a meaningful effect on acne-prone skin that conventional bactericidal treatments cannot replicate.
The botanical science of acne-prone skin
Anti-inflammatory, calming actives
Tea tree and lavender work together to calm the inflammation and irritation that comes with active breakouts, without disrupting the skin's natural balance. For targeted blemishes, a concentrated tea tree, peppermint and geranium serum helps combat spots directly while soothing redness and irritation.
Nourishment and barrier support
Grapeseed and peach oils are rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin A and vitamin E, supporting cell regeneration and collagen production. Because our oils penetrate into the lower layers of the skin, unlike creams which sit on the surface, these nutrients reach where they're actually needed.
Balancing without stripping
Grapefruit helps balance oily, acne-prone skin, while lavender soothes any accompanying redness or sensitivity, avoiding the aggressive stripping that can trigger rebound breakouts.

Why Natural Elements is different
Natural Elements was founded in 1998 by dermatology scientists, not aromatherapists or marketers. Our formulations are built on university-level research into how plant compounds interact with skin at a cellular and molecular level.

Co-founder John Hamilton
Has spent nearly three decades formulating products that ask a single question: what does the skin actually need to function correctly? For acne-prone skin, that means addressing inflammation, barrier integrity, and sebum regulation simultaneously: not just targeting the most visible symptom.
No ingredients that aggravate acne-prone skin
Our acne range contains none of the ingredients that commonly cause problems for acne-prone and sensitive skin: no mineral oils, no synthetic fragrances, no comedogenic emollients, no parabens, no SLS. Every formulation is built to work with reactive skin, not against it.
Molecule size matters
Most skincare, including many products marketed for acne, sits on the surface of dead skin. At Natural Elements, formulations are developed around the physicochemical properties of raw materials to ensure active ingredients reach the cells that need them. Surface application of an anti-inflammatory compound that doesn't penetrate is simply ineffective.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is botanical skincare really effective for adult acne?
Yes, and the evidence base is growing. The key is formulation quality and ingredient selection. Many products labelled 'natural' are poorly formulated and ineffective. Natural Elements formulations are built on the science of how specific plant compounds interact with skin at a cellular level, targeting the inflammatory pathways that drive acne rather than just surface symptoms.
Can I use these products if I'm currently on prescription acne treatment?
In most cases, yes. Our formulations are gentle and designed to support barrier function, which often makes them complementary to prescription treatment. If you're using topical retinoids or antibiotics, we recommend you contacting John at john@naturalelementsskincare.com
My skin is very sensitive from years of harsh treatments. Is this suitable?
This is actually one of the most common reasons people come to us. Our formulations contain none of the ingredients that typically aggravate sensitised skin: no synthetic fragrance, no SLS, no mineral oils, no parabens. The barrier-repair focus of our acne range is specifically designed to help skin that has been compromised by conventional treatment.
I have hormonal acne that gets worse around my cycle. Will this help?
Hormonal acne is driven by androgen fluctuations that trigger excess sebum production and follicular inflammation. While no topical treatment can directly address hormonal fluctuations, our anti-inflammatory botanical actives can significantly reduce the skin's inflammatory response to those fluctuations, making breakouts less severe and shorter-lived.
What about acne scarring and dark marks?
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and surface scarring are often more distressing than the acne itself, and they're absolutely something our formulations address. Several of our core formulations contain vitamin C-rich botanical oils and cell-renewal actives that support skin regeneration and help fade dark marks over time. Do contact John at john@naturalelementsskincare.com for specialised support.
Do you have anything for teenagers with acne?
Yes, we have a specific range formulated for younger skin. If you're a parent looking for a gentle, effective alternative to conventional teenage acne treatment, Pre-teen Skincare Kit can help.
