The Truth About Skincare: Why Most Products Don’t Work

If you look closely at most skincare products, even those positioned as premium or “clean”, you’ll find they’re largely designed to create the appearance of effectiveness rather than deliver meaningful, long-term change.

They can feel good to use and may leave the skin temporarily softer or more hydrated, but they rarely address the underlying biological processes that drive skin ageing, including oxidative stress, collagen breakdown and cellular damage.

At Natural Elements, we’ve taken a different approach. One that starts with understanding how the skin actually functions, and what it needs to stay healthy, resilient, and able to repair itself over time.

That understanding has been built through years of research into cellular ageing, working alongside academic institutions and through our own commissioned studies, including collaborations with the University of Birmingham. This work has given us a deeper insight into how and why skin changes at a cellular level, and more importantly, what genuinely supports it.

Everything we create is grounded in that thinking. Not just how skin looks in the moment, but how it functions over time.

Skin Ageing Begins at a Cellular Level

Skin ageing is not something that starts on the surface, even though that is where we see the visible changes. It begins much deeper, within the cells themselves, where ongoing environmental exposure and internal processes gradually affect how those cells function.

Over time, factors such as oxidative stress, the breakdown of collagen and elastin, a reduced capacity for cellular repair and persistent low-level inflammation all contribute to the way skin changes in texture, tone and elasticity.

If a skincare product is not supporting these underlying processes, then it is unlikely to deliver results that last beyond the immediate surface effect.

Why So Many Skincare Products Fall Short

A large proportion of skincare is developed around what is commercially viable to produce and scale, rather than what is most beneficial for the skin at a biological level, which is why so many formulations end up delivering only superficial results.

Many creams and serums remain within the outermost layers of the skin, where they can provide a temporary smoothing effect but have very limited influence on the deeper layers where new cells are formed and where collagen production takes place.

In addition, synthetic formulations are often built from isolated compounds that lack the wider network of nutrients and cofactors naturally present in plant-based ingredients, meaning they are working in a far more limited and fragmented way.

It is also worth considering the structure of commonly used ingredients such as waxes and butters, which tend to have larger molecular sizes and therefore sit on the surface of the skin, contributing to hydration but not necessarily to long-term skin function or repair.

Finally, the inclusion of certain preservatives, alcohols and heavily processed ingredients can, over time, compromise the skin barrier, particularly in individuals who are already experiencing sensitivity or inflammation.

The Role of Free Radicals in Skin Ageing

One of the most significant contributors to visible skin ageing is free radical damage, which is generated through a combination of environmental exposure, such as UV radiation and pollution, and normal metabolic processes within the body.

These unstable molecules interact with cellular structures, including collagen and elastin, gradually weakening the skin’s support network and accelerating the signs of ageing.

For this reason, antioxidant protection is not simply an optional addition to a skincare routine, but a central component of maintaining healthy, resilient skin over time. Antioxidants ONLY come from plant oils there is none whatsoever in synthetic man made materials or petro-chemicals - hence why you are told to eat vegetables.

Why We Use Plant-Based Ingredients

Our formulations are built around unadulterated therapeutic grade plant oils and extracts because they offer a level of biological complexity that is very difficult to replicate synthetically... this is much higher in term of health benefit than organic grown

These ingredients naturally contain a broad spectrum of vitamins, including A, B complex, C, D and E, alongside essential fatty acids for skin barrier, amino acids the building blocks for collagen which, sterols and trace minerals such as magnesium, copper and iron, all of which play a role in supporting skin function at a cellular level. We also use certain plant extracts to tone and re-strengthen fibres and elastin's which as we age become entangled and slack which causes sagging or crepey skin  on neck chest- Décollage, Arms, back of hands and the face

Rather than delivering a single isolated active, they provide a more integrated system of support, helping to maintain the skin barrier, encourage collagen production, improve elasticity and protect against free radical oxidative stress. We then sit them in the world’s most skin effective vital oils ..Vital oils are now being shown to be the bodyguards of cells and Longevity of them.

This approach allows the skin to function more effectively, rather than forcing short-term changes that are not sustainable.

Skin Compatibility and Absorptions

The skin is naturally lipid-based, which means it is inherently more receptive to ingredients that share a similar structure, such as high-quality plant oils. (as the famous professor Brian Cox  said once ‘humans share so much similarities to plant cellular structures’ ) it makes sense what they are made of is so good for humans

These oils are able to integrate more effectively into the skin barrier, supporting hydration and resilience without creating the kind of occlusive layer that can sometimes occur with synthetic formulations...this is something we commissioned studiesfor with Birmingham university which products two science papers.

In practical terms, this helps to improve moisture retention, strengthen the skin’s natural defences and support the processes involved in repair and renewal.

The Role of Essential Oils in Our Formulations

We use essential oils with a clear functional purpose, rather than simply for fragrance, selecting often organically derived materials that are known to support the skin in specific ways anti-inflammatory anti microbial anti ageing with terpenoids and phenols and stimulate cell regenerating collagen production thus reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

When used appropriately, they can contribute to maintaining a balanced skin environment, supporting repair processes and helping the skin to remain resilient in the face of external stressors. We use the very best most expensive ingredients  in the world and you don't see that reflected in our prices. we are product first, not profit first.

Understanding the Term “Natural” in Skincare

The term “natural” is widely used across the skincare industry, but it is often applied in a way that does not fully reflect how a product has been formulated or processed.

Many products that are marketed as natural still rely on synthetically derived molecules and alcohol preservatives or worse still things linked with breast cancer , heavily processed ingredients or standardised base formulations that prioritise cost and stability over biological activity.

Similarly, the term “organic” typically refers to how an plant has been grown, rather than how it has been extracted or how it will behave within a finished formulation.

Our focus is on maintaining ingredient integrity, ensuring that the materials we use retain as much of their original nutritional therapeutic value  and functional value as possible. In addition to this we are often half the price and or twice the sizes of most natural organic brands yet use the the very best most expensive ingredients  in the world.

Designed for Skin That Needs Support

Natural Elements was developed with compromised and sensitive skin in mind, particularly in cases where conventional skincare has either failed to deliver results or has contributed to further irritation. The term sensitive means nothing in the majority of products even naturals we correct that having many people come to us using naturals and still have skin problems

This includes skin that is prone to sensitivity, rosacea, eczema  psoriasis dermatitis  blepharitis or general barrier disruption, where a more supportive and restorative approach is required.

Rather than overstimulating the skin, the aim is to strengthen it over time, allowing it to become more balanced and resilient.

Real Results, Not Just Claims

Over the years, we have received feedback from thousands of people who have seen meaningful improvements in their skin, often after struggling to find products that worked for them elsewhere including the medical world, we are often the products that work when so many did not.

These experiences are reflected in the large number of customer reviews available across our full-size product pages, where common themes include improved comfort, reduced sensitivity and a noticeable improvement in overall skin condition.

At Natural Elements, we do things differently. We are often half the price, or offer twice the product size, compared to many natural and organic brands, while still using some of the highest quality and most carefully sourced ingredients available.

We also believe that how a product is made and packaged matters. Wherever possible, we use recyclable and recycled materials, because creating better skincare shouldn’t come at the expense of the wider environment.

A More Considered Approach to Skin Health

Skincare is often approached from the perspective of appearance. But real, lasting improvements tend to come from supporting how the skin functions.

That means working with the skin, not against it, and focusing on long-term health rather than quick fixes.
