The Sunscreen Paradox: Why Are Skin Cancer Rates Still Rising?

The Sunscreen Paradox: Why Are Skin Cancer Rates Still Rising?

For decades we've been told that sunscreen is the answer.

Wear sunscreen. Reapply sunscreen. Trust sunscreen.

Yet despite sunscreen use increasing dramatically over the last fifty years, skin cancer rates have continued to rise.

A recent paper published in the Journal of Public Health Policy explored this contradiction, describing what some researchers have called the "sunscreen paradox".

But the article raises an even bigger question.

What are we actually putting on our skin every day?

Most people carefully read food labels.

Few people ever read the ingredients in their sunscreen.

Yet many mainstream sunscreens contain synthetic UV filters including oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene.

These ingredients have become increasingly controversial.

The FDA has acknowledged that several common sunscreen chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream and require additional safety data.

Oxybenzone has been investigated for possible hormone-disrupting effects.

Octinoxate has raised similar concerns.

Octocrylene has attracted attention because it can break down over time to form benzophenone, a substance classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a possible human carcinogen.

Meanwhile, some regions around the world have restricted certain sunscreen ingredients because of environmental concerns.

Despite all of this, millions of people continue to apply these chemicals to themselves and their children every single day without ever questioning what is inside the bottle.

At Natural Elements, we believe you deserve better than "just trust us".

We believe people have a right to ask difficult questions.

We believe ingredients matter.

And we believe true sun protection is about far more than simply rubbing chemicals onto the skin.

Protective clothing. Seeking shade.  Avoiding excessive sun exposure. Supporting the skin barrier.  Understanding ingredients.

Because healthy skin should never begin with blind trust.
